Course Overview
PART 1 of this Course is designed to give you the background information about Pharyngeal High-Resolution Manometry-Impedance (P-HRM-I).
This background module provides information on technology for pharyngeal manometry and insights needed to understand swallowing function and dysfunction through the prism of pressure and impedance plots. For those new to pharyngeal manometry, this information will give you the background needed the learn how to use Swallow Gateway.
PART 2 of this Course is designed to show you how to use the Swallow Gateway to analyse manometry-impedance recordings.
The information, activities and exercises included are designed to optimise your training and achieve the following learning outcomes:
- Upload and analysis of pressure-impedance recordings of pharyngeal swallowing.
- Understanding pharyngeal pressure-impedance metrics; derivation in Swallow Gateway and what they indicate about oropharyngeal swallowing physiology.
- Upload and analysis of pressure-impedance recordings of esophageal peristalsis.
- Understanding esophageal pressure-impedance metrics and what they indicate about esophageal bolus transport physiology.
- Analysis of esophago-gastric junction pressures.
To complete Part 2 Course Exercises, you will need a Research Associate or Clinical Associate Level subscription.
PART 3 of the Course is designed to teach you how to interpret Swallow Gateway plots and data.
This part of the Course applies Parts 1 and 2 and explores how to potentially use and interpret the Pharyngeal HRM derived information. It is designed for trained professionals; physicians, speech pathologists, nurses, scientists and technicians who are performing diagnostic swallowing assessments.
Part 4 of the Course will teach you about the Leuven Consensus.
The Leuven Consensus provides a classification scheme for diagnosis of pharyngeal and upper esophageal sphincter (UES) motor disorders using metrics derived by P-HRM-I and covers three aspects:
A. Indications for P-HRM-I, Consensus Metrics & Swallow Challenge Protocol
B. Diagnosis of UES Dysfunction
C. Diagnosis of Pharyngeal Contractile Dysfunction
Tutorial Session
A one-on-one tutorial is also available for participants to go over any specific aspects of the Course that they had difficulty with.
